Momchilgrad wastewater treatment plant has successfully passed the 72-hour tests and can now be put into operation. This means that the facility will start operating ahead of schedule. The modern facility is part of the largest project of the Momchilgrad Municipality for “Reconstruction, modernization and completion of the water supply network and construction of a City Wastewater Treatment Plant /WWTP”. The funds are provided by the Operational Program “Environment 2007-2013”.

The treatment plant is located in the land of the village of Sushevo/2 km from the main road between Momchilgrad and Kardjali/ and fits perfectly into the environment. A new road has been built for vehicular access to it. Various types of trees have already been planted on its adjacent terrain.

Until the construction of the treatment plant, the wastewater of the residents of Momchilgrad was discharged directly into the river Varbitsa, thereby polluting it. Their discharge posed a real danger to all other settlements in the vicinity due to the fact that the river flows into the Studen Kladenets dam.

Now the purified water can be used for artificial irrigation of cultivated areas. This will significantly reduce the use of drinking water for irrigation, which is in line with European requirements.

“I can state that over 80% of the Water Cycle has already been built. The intensified work on construction and assembly activities makes us ambitious that the project will be completed ahead of schedule, despite the problems under the Operational Program “Environment”. The implementation of this project is an example and proof of the meaning of investing in ecological infrastructure. The new water supply and sewerage network will solve the municipality’s problems for the next 50 years,” assured the mayor of Momchilgrad Municipality, Akif Akif.

After the construction of the Momchilgrad Water Cycle, water losses from the water supply network are expected to decrease by about 63%, according to the operating company “V and K” OOD – Kardzhali. The old internal water network was built in the 1950s.
